wikispaces
This is part four of a week-long series of posts celebrating
Wikispaces’ Fourth Birthday. Check back on Monday for part five!

Today, we have introduced six new themes for you to try out on your wikis. We hope that with a wider variety of themes, and color combinations aplenty, you can customize your wiki exactly to your liking.

Flex and FlexFluid are color-customizable versions of our own Wikispaces home theme, with subtle gradients and rounded corners. Flex is the fixed-width version of this theme; FlexFluid, the fluid-width version.

Our next new additions are Boxy and Tatami, and their left-handed twins BoxyLeft and TatamiLeft. They are simple, clean designs, intended to call attention to your wiki’s content.

For something with a little more pizzazz, we have Glass and Notebook. Our fixed-width Glass theme features a glassy header background, and subtle use of opacity on the tabs. Notebook resembles a wooden desk with a spiral-bound notebook on top, and would be a fun choice for our K-12 classroom wikis.

As with our existing themes, these new themes offer color customization, allowing you to select a color combination that suits your wiki. Additionally, for our Plus and Super wikis, these themes offer more starting points for creating custom themes.

So, go ahead, give them a spin! To try out any of these new themes, go to “Manage Wiki,” “Look and Feel,” and then to “Change or make a new theme.” Once you have selected your theme, choose your wiki’s colors on the “Look and Feel” page. For our Private Label customers, these themes are not yet available, but will be soon.

Since these themes are new, we anticipate that they may still have some kinks to work out, and we will be updating them as we receive your feedback. If you have any issues with how the new themes look or behave, please email us at help@wikispaces.com.

Will these not be made available to the private labels? We have been wishing for new themes for a long time.

    Hi Sharon,

They will appear on Private Label sites. We plan to iron out any bugs people find in the themes first and then we’ll add them to your sites.

    Best,
    Sarah

    ROCKIN

    These themes rock!

I especially like “Tatami”. I like it even more since I have tatami in my house :) .

There is just one but. My monitor is a 19″ Widescreen. The new themes with the exception of “Glass” all span the entire width of the screen. This means my eyes and my mouse will have to travel greater distances using the wiki.

One might say: well then don’t maximize your browser window. True, but a maximized browser provides for an environment relatively devoid of distractions. It eases my mind. I would choose maximized browsing anytime, even if it means that my websites come to span the full width of 40cm.

So my request would be to build a version of “Tatami” that uses limited width. Limited width means shorter lines of text, that makes for easier reading. Given that “Tatami” has a space.menu on the right, it also means that the navigation and the main page contents are less far apart.

But, I’m not sure if at possible at all. In any case I think the color scheme rocks.
