Wikispaces Widgets

Based on many of your requests, we have added a new feature that allows you to easily embed dynamic information about your space into your wiki pages.

While editing your page, click on the embed widget icon in the toolbar.

The “Widget” window will pop up. Go to “Wikispaces.”

There you will see a list of our simple widgets you can add to your page, including a list of wiki pages, discussion area, tag cloud, and top contributors.

If you go to my user page on the Wikipedia site, you see a lot of personalized badges.

It would be neat if wikispaces users could similarly make personalized badges that reflect whatever interests they choose.

I’ve tried copying the code I use with Wikipedia into text editor with wikispaces but it didn’t work. Any advice?

    Cynthia,

We will look into adding this feature. If there’s anything specific you’d like to see with these badges (e.g. your space logo, customized text, etc.), let us know. And thanks for the feedback. Keep it coming.

    Best,

Hi, very interesting. But I’m the beginner in Internet technologies. I’ll try to use them.

Hi, well it sounds so nice and such, but I’m totally clueless how to insert them. I don’t even understand if the widgets are the list on the left with icons (wikispaces, video, audio), or the list in the right of the picture (table of contents, rss).

Point is clicking on the images does open no help at all, only “view” the image.

    That is using firefox.

Well, to be more honest, I do understand which are the widgets, I just wanted to say, this “help” page looks too light. I expected a detailed entry for each widget what was its purpose, samples and such, especially the “other” one.

    Gronyon,

The new feature we added was part of our existing embed tool. The tool allows you to embed code from different services, such as YouTube or Google Calendar, on to your space. We have written more about the tool in previous posts at:

    http://blog.wikispaces.com/2007/09/widgets.html
    and http://blog.wikispaces.com/2006/07/wikispaces-now-with-media-applications.html

In order to actual use this tool, you can go to your space, click “Edit This Page,” and then go to the TV icon in your toolbar. There you can explore the list of different media types and see some of the services that allow you to embed their content.

The new feature I described above is an addition to this embed tool. When you click on “Wikispaces Widgets”, you can see a new type of content you can embed into your space - content about your Wikispace.

    Hope that helps clarify things.

    kisharobin,

Do you have specific things that you are trying to do on your Wikispace that you are having difficulty with? I can guide you through them. Alternatively, if you are looking for ideas about what is possible, check out Wikispaces discussion page at: http://www.wikispaces.com/message/list/home .

I understand how to embed the new media types and have done so with the slideshow and Google calendar. Some people visiting my site have stated that these do not work on their computer while others can view them just fine (as can I). They are using IE6 or IE7 for the most part with multimedia options turned on.

What might cause these embedded media objects not to work on some machines.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Tom,

We’ve seen some scattered reports, most of which end up having to do with the widgets themselves than wikispaces in particular. If you find a case where someone can’t view a particular widget on Wikispaces, that they can view elsewhere, drop us an email and let us know what browser they are using. We’ll check it out.

I love this feature! It is much more easier to enter things! Great feature! It is the best thing of wikispace’s (Well except for making the site!)

When I use the List of Wiki Pages widget, it only lists the first 25pct. or so of the pages I’ve created.

    What’s up with that?

  17. on 12 Feb 2008 at 5:18 pmSarah

    Don,

Edit your page. If you switch to the text editor, you can change the number of pages that are listed. You will see:

    [[include component=”pageList”]]

The default is 10 pages. You can change it by adding the limit parameter:

    [[include component=”pageList” limit=”50″]]

where 50 will now be the number of pages shown.

I am trying to put twitterlit to my homepage with no success. Any suggestion?

    Sarah,
How do I reorder my pages in the content box on my home page?

  20. on 21 Feb 2008 at 4:30 pmSarah

    sk,

Try going to the TwitterLit widget page at http://www.twitterlit.com/widget.html . There are several different widget options. Click on the one you would like. You will see something like “Get Code” or “Embed Code.”

Copy that code and then go to your space. Edit your page and go to the embed tool in the toolbar. Click on “Other HTML,” paste the code into that box, and then “Save.”

If you have any errors or problems along the way, send us an e-mail to help@wikispaces.com .

    Cheers,
    Sarah

    worewren,

Are you trying to reorder the list of pages in your navigation bar on the left-hand side of page? If so, you can read my response to this question here: http://blog.wikispaces.com/2008/02/changes-to-the-navigation-bar.html#comment-5065

If I haven’t answered your question, send me an e-mail at help@wikispaces.com with your space name. Point me to what you are trying to reorder and I’ll take a look.

    Sarah

How do I convert a powerpoint slide show to a widget that I can put on my wikispace?

  23. on 19 Mar 2008 at 4:40 pmAdam

    Debbie,

You would first need to find an online service that will take your powerpoint file and turn it into a widget. Slideshare is one such service: http://www.slideshare.net/

You then use our widget tool (it’s the TV button in the editor) to embed the code they give you to put it on your wikispaces page.
