wikispaces

We do one thing at Wikispaces: easy-to-use wikis.

But the web is full of other great services that we want you to be able to use right from your wiki. Think video, audio, calendars, group chat and more.

So today, we launch our embedded media function. This means you can now paste in the HTML from any web service and it will show up on your wikispaces page. You get the media and applications you want, with the simplicity of Wikispaces’ WYSIWYG editor.

Some examples of services you might want to embed include YouTube, Google, and Yahoo videos, Google and AirSet calendars, Odeo podcasts, and of course there are many many more.

How do you use it? Well, when editing any Wikispaces page, you’ll see a new button on the toolbar that looks like a television. Click it, and paste the HTML in the box. Simple as that.

Let us know what kinds of things you embed. We’re sure you’ll come up with some creative uses in no time.

The embedded multiemdia file feature is just what we needed for working with social media projects using the wiki as workspace as well as for the presentation. I do have one problem, though. When copying a code string where autorun is set to false (on a video file from Vimeo, for example), the Wikispace embed code converter makes the file start playing automatically when opening the page as default.

For obvious reasons I would much prefer the other way round - that each user have a choice whether to start the video or not. For example there might be more text to read before wanting to see that video, or there was a reason to collect more video clips on the same page, or the user would need to put on a headset so as not to disturb other students in the computer lab with noise. I’ll have to experiment a bit more with this tool

    Hi susnyrop,

Thanks for the note - we’ll look at why the autorun setting is changing. Our goal is for the embedded video to work exactly as you intend, so something is definitely going wrong.

    Best,
    James
